The War on Drugs PSA
The war on drugs is an attempt to rid the United States of a 'major drug problem'. Starting in 1971 President Richard Nixon declared the 'war on drugs' and named drug abuse 'Public Enemy #1'. This action will cause a wave of money loss and death more than anything Nixon was expecting. The war on drugs, while having a good purpose, is pointless and is only costing us money and people’s lives. The War on Drugs is seen as a pointless effort to stop the inevitable, it has a lot of negative side effects like innocent people jailed, trillions of dollars lost, and tens of thousands of people dead.
Drugs have been a part of society for almost all of humanity, and are unavoidable despite many efforts to do so. The reason being is that if you take a drug plant out of one country, it will show up in a few other countries around it. This is because of the high demand for it, and it will always be like this. This also causes violence between drug gangs for control over territory to sell their own drugs. Despite this problem almost all countries still have drugs illegalized because they can destroy lives. But if in a country, Portugal for example, decriminalized drugs society would still flourish and actually improve. If a country did legalize drugs that country could use the drugs for their good medical qualities, they could end drug violence and help those addicted to said drugs.
The United States war on drugs is pretty much a really efficient way to waste money. The US has spent over 1 Trillion dollars towards the war. Despite this massive number, the US hasn’t much of an improvement if any at all. A chunk of this money goes towards Anti-drug ads and PSA's but these have been reportedly ineffective and even encouraging people to use drugs. Studies show that kids shown these ads are more likely to use drugs, even with this the US still produces the ads in hope of something positive. The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) was created to control Americas fight against drugs but since adapting harsh drug laws millions are arrested on possession charges alone. Because of this the United States, even with only 5% of the global population, holds 25% of the world’s inmates. We waste space in our already crowded prisons for people who like to occasionally do drugs, that doesn’t seem right. The prohibition of drugs is causing the majority of violence around the world, if the government could regulate the drugs the gang problems would lessen dramatically.
But it’s not always smooth sailing when it comes to drugs, if legalized or decriminalized US citizens might do drugs just because they legally can. This obviously could turn into an epidemic and result in illegalization again. People could easily think these drugs are completely safe because they came from a lab and they could overdose. Children would be an issue because if a toddler got a hold of methamphetamine or heroin the end result would not be pretty. The war on drugs could end up being the only thing keeping humanity together and drugs, in the end, will destroy our society.
The war on drugs is a tough subject because it’s something that can ruin peoples live but can also serve great purposes in modern society if used correctly. If someone would want to end the war on drugs in the US it would be a very long a tedious process but the end result could be greatly worth it. The War on Drugs is a National waste of resources, money and human life to attempt to stop something inevitable.
